3 Ways to Protect Yourself from Cyber Attacks
The invention of the internet has brought with it a world of opportunities, new ways of doing things that allow us to accomplish tasks we never thought possible and do things better than we ever have before. Indeed, technology has changed the world and life as we know it.
However, along with the good it has brought and continues to bring, the internet is riddled with danger. While many and most people choose to use technology for good, there are some who utilise the internet as a tool to commit crimes and carry out nefarious deeds. Therefore, it’s of the utmost importance that if you are an internet user – as most of us are these days – you are aware of cyber security risks you face. Better yet, equip yourself with knowledge of the things that you can do in anticipation or response.
Here are 3 ways to protect yourself from cyber-attacks.
Make Use of Multi-Factor Authentication
Having a pin, facial recognition or a unique pattern code to get into your cell phone or computer may seem like a fool-proof way in which to keep intruders out, but it may not always be so. While some of these methods of authentication are more reliable than others, having just one layer of security leaves you vulnerable.
Rather, try and make use of multi-factor authentication. This means that rather than using only one of the above methods – such as a pin, for instance – you use two or three. This means that even if an intruder manages to find out your code or hack your device or system, they’ll still have to deal with another method of authentication. This simply makes it more difficult to commit cyber attacks and it may also act as a deterrent.
Know What to Look Out For
Unfortunately, prevention isn’t always possible, but if you have an idea of suspicious things to look out for, at least you’ll be heading in the right direction.
The most obvious, and important, things to be aware of are phishing attacks – these may be deployed by means of emails or pop-up adverts. Always be wary of clicking on links from people you don’t know, and even those you do – if it seems suspicious, it probably is, so trust your instincts.
Don’t give your personal information out freely either – be aware of things like online quizzes, even if they seem harmless. You may think you’re trying to find out what breed of dog you’d be if you were a canine, but the quiz maker may simply be using the opportunity to get personal information out of you.
Always Update Your Software
This seems obvious, but it’s really important. Ensure that all your software is always up to date, from your NZ online casino games downloads to your antivirus. That way, you can rely on it to pick up suspicious activity and notify you when there’s something that you ought to be concerned about.
